Discover the ruins of the Stone Age and the ancient history of Zoroastrianism on a day excursion to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Gobustan National Park and Absheron Peninsula.
After being picked up from your Baku hotel in the morning, proceed to Gobustan. Make a halt at the Bibi-Heybat Mosque to see an industrialised oil well.
The tour continues to the Gobustan Museum of Petroglyphs, a 70-kilometre-long indoor and outdoor museum about 70 kilometres from Baku. Admire prehistoric rock engravings and petroglyphs carved by the primitive man on cave walls and rocks, depicting the ancient Azeri people's culture, economy, and world outlook.
Then, travel to Azerbaijan's coastal region, home to 400 mud volcanoes. Stop for lunch at a neighbourhood eatery and sample delectable Azerbaijani foods. After lunch, visit the historic Zoroastrian Ateshgah Temple, a former holy location for fire-worshippers. Finish the day by visiting Yanardag, a natural gas fire that burns continuously on an Absheron Peninsula mountainside.
On rainy days, the mud volcanoes will be skipped for safety. Also, lunch isn't included, but there is a stop at a buffet-stle restaurant where you can purchase lunch for about $12
